The title, Known, forgotten, half-recalled, is taken from T.S. Eliot’s Little Gidding (Four Quartets). This duo for violin and piano contemplates Eliot’s notion of memory in all its nostalgia, confusion, elation and acceptance. It was written in 1995 in memory of Michael Perl, who was a particularly wonderful uncle to my father Geoffrey; and I too have fond memories of visiting him. It was written to be performed by Edwina Kayser and Deviani Segal and premiered on the 1st of August 1995 at the Freemason’s chapel in Prahran as part of a concert staged by the British Music Society of Victoria (now known as the Lyrebird Music Society).
