program note
The Moon is in synchronous rotation with the Earth, always showing the same face. The most visible celestial object in night sky, the Moon’s phases have been a guide, mystery and delight to humanity for millennia.
This piece was commissioned by Cherry Hense and Will Ekselman to celebrate the 70th birthday of their mother, Kristine Ekselman (b. 26 February 1947). On that day in 1947 it was a waxing crescent and on this birthday in 2017 it will be a new moon.
