program note
This song is taken from The Parrot Factory, an opera for all ages in 1 act, completed in 2010 to a libretto by Ross Baglin. In scene 6, Gina reveals her fears for her husband Jimmy, who is out of his depth dealing in the black market.

text
This morning, at dawn, I saw Jimmy’s face
In a lattice of shadow, cast from a window,
And felt that a cage was closing around….
Then he started awake, from dreaming he’d drowned
By wading too deep in the pearl-budded sea ;

However the shattered fireworks fall,
However the comet tails ripple and pall
The furrows they shot in the night once shone
Though all is darkness once they’re gone –
Am I too weak a torch to summon him home ?
